Installation

Gate is a single CLI with no account, no API key, and no service dependency. The fastest way to use it is not to install it at all.

Run it without installing

npx @usegate/cli scan

Run it in any repository that has agent configuration and you will get a result in a second or two.

Install it

If you are going to run Gate often, install it so the command is just gate.

Install Gate

npm install -g @usegate/cli

Or add it to a project so the whole team gets the same version:

npm install --save-dev @usegate/cli

package.json

{
  "scripts": {
    "security:agents": "gate scan"
  }
}

Requirements

  • Name
    Node.js
    Type
    22 or newer
    Description

    Gate is a plain Node CLI. Node 22.18+ is needed only if you want to write configuration as gate.config.ts; gate.config.json works everywhere.

  • Name
    git
    Type
    optional
    Description

    Used for the anonymous repository fingerprint and to tell tracked configuration from untracked. Gate works fine without it.

  • Name
    Network
    Type
    not required
    Description

    A default scan makes no network calls. Optional telemetry is a single fire-and-forget request you can turn off.

  • Name
    Platforms
    Type
    macOS, Linux, Windows
    Description

    Path handling, home-directory expansion and filesystem scope analysis are tested on all three.

Verify

gate --version
gate rules

gate rules lists every check Gate performs. If that prints a list, you are ready.
